1892 East & West Africa (M’ Wele) & WW1 Medal Pair ‘SUPDT. R.M. Ewart’ (E. Africa Police)

This original, scarce Victorian and Great War group of full-size medals were awarded to ‘Superintendent Raymond Marmaduke Ewart’ who served in numerous East African police forces and comes with some research. The group consists of the scarce ‘1892 East & West Africa Medal’ with ‘M’Wele 1895-6’ impressed on the rim, instead of a clasp, the 1914-15 Star and Victory Medals. (I noticed many years ago the war medal was sold on Kaplans). The rims read, 1892 medal – ‘MWELE 1895-6, R.M. EWART’, Star – ‘SUPDT. R.M. EWART, EAST AFR. POLICE’ and Victory medal ‘SUPDT. R.M. EWART’. The medals are in great condition, nicely tarnished with their ribbons.

NOTE: I found a career reference to him in a book on the ‘History of British East Africa’, which I’ve included in the photos. In short, it read that he was the first organiser of police in East Africa, served in the Manipur Field Force, was acting Vice – Consul for Hodeida & Cameran, served in the Aden Police, was Supdt. in the Zanzibar Police, Supdt. in the East Africa Protectorate and Inspector General of Police.
