Antique Cased Dutch Silver ‘Hanau – Apostle’ Teaspoons
R11,500.00
This wonderful, antique, cased set of twelve sold silver ‘Hanau’ ‘Apostle’ teaspoons are in excellent condition. They were made around the late 1800’s by Dutch silversmith ‘Rinze Jans Spaanstra’ who regularly exported silver using ‘Pseudo’ hallmarks, to avoid paying customs tax on new items entering the UK. The set is beautifully presented in its original purple velvet and satin lined case. Each spoon measures 13cm in length and together weigh a heavy 225g.
Note: Silverware imported to the UK from Germany and the Netherlands during the late 1800’s was often stamped with pseudo or fantasy silver hallmarks to portray the item as much older, to avoid paying duties on new silver. This silver is often referred to as ‘Hanau’ silver.
