Rare Antique Carved ‘Mother-of-Pearl’ Shell Nativity Scene (Framed)
This incredible, rare, antique, hand-carved ‘mother-of-pearl’ shell, Holy Land souvenir from the late 1800’s/early 1900’s, depicts a moment shortly after the birth of Jesus in a stable in Bethlehem. It is exceptionally well carved in high and low relief, like a cameo, giving it a three-dimensional look and feel, with intricately pierced openwork panels, all with amazing fine detail. Besides the large nativity scene in the centre, there’s various round smaller panels, two of which have cherubs. In-between, these panels are beautifully engraved and pierced vines, and above is a cartouche with the inscription ‘Bethlehem’.
This shell would have been purchased by a very early, visiting Christian pilgrim, during their visit to Bethlehem as a souvenir and other than a small minor chip to the outer edge, it’s in great condition. It has been mounted on green felt behind glass and double framed in a gilt wooden frame. The shell measures 13cm x 13cm, with the frame measuring 12cm x 30cm x 4,5cm. These very early, ‘Holy Land’ mother-of-pearl shell souvenirs have become very sought after and are fetching high prices around the world.
