Rare Art Nouveau Doulton Burslem ‘Hyperion Ware’ Vase (C1895)
This antique Doulton Burslem vase is absolutely stunning. It is decorated with raised poppies in various shades of blue and white on a baby blue background, with a gilt border of lily pads around the top. This particular style of painting was introduced by Charles Noke in the late 1800’s and pieces were generally painted by 3 artists – Fred Walklate, John Kelsall and Edward Raby. ‘Hyperion Ware’ has no special marks, but it is so distinctive, that it stands out from the rest. It was only produced for a very short period and is seldom seen coming up for sale. In 30 years of trading in Royal Doulton this is the only piece I’ve come across. The vase is in pristine condition (it’s hard to imagine that it’s at least 120 years old. It measures 22cm in height, 7cm in width (at its widest) and has a base diameter of 5cm.
