This wonderful, scarce antique, historical plate, commemorating the actions of the second Boer War, is in excellent condition and was made by ‘William Lowe’ potters, at the ‘Sydney Works’ in Stoke on Trent, England. The central wording on blue reads, ‘WAR DECLARED IN SOUTH AFRICA BY PRESIDENT KRUGER’ ‘OCT-11th 1899’ ‘LORD ROBERTS - COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF CAPE COLONY’ ‘GENERAL BULLER – COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF NATAL’. The plate has raised decoration with a scalloped rim and is decorated with an underglaze transfer, featuring hand painted details in various bright colours and highlighted with lovely gilt borders and trim. It measures 24,5cm in diameter and carries the early ‘William Lowe’ factory backstamp which was used between 1874 and 1912.
