Very Rare (Desert Rats) Solid Gold ‘4th S.A. Armoured Car Regt.’ Sweetheart Brooch/Badge
This very rare sweetheart brooch/badge of the ‘4th South African Armoured Car Regiment’, who were referred to as the famous ‘Desert Rats’, has been manufactured in solid 9ct gold. The ‘Jerboa’, with engraved detail, is in 9ct rose gold and is mounted on a 9ct white gold brooch in the form of their cap badge, which was worn for a very short period, between 1941 and 1942. They served with great distinction in North Africa as part of the 7th British Armoured Division. I have never come across a badge in solid gold, so I can only presume this badge or sweetheart brooch was a specially made. It is in excellent condition and measures 2.5cm x 2.7cm and weighs 4.8g.
