Victorian ‘Mourning – Woven Hair’ Watch Chain (C.1870/80)
This fabulous, scarce, late 1800’s ‘Mourning Hairwork’ fob watch chain, has been beautifully made from woven and braided human hair with ‘rose-gold’ coloured metal mounts, T-bar and ‘lobster-claw’ catch. The cylindrical mounts on the ends of the woven hair are possibly solid gold, with a pretty leaf engraved pattern. This wonderful piece of Victorian mourning jewellery is in great condition and measures 45cm in length.
NOTE: Mourning jewellery represents a connection to a deceased loved one, and traces back to the 16th century, but became popular and more fashionable by Queen Victoria, after the death of Prince Albert in 1861.
