Antique ‘Cape Silver’ Snuff Box

This fabulous, fine, solid silver snuff box from the early 1800’s has a wonderful shape and has been beautifully made and decorated. Although there are no markings or factory stamps, unlike English or Continental silver, which is normally stamped, I’m of the opinion that this is a lovely, early Cape silver piece. The box also has the name ‘J. Thomson’ engraved in the small oval cartouche on the lid, which is a very early Cape name. Other than some wear to the original interior gilding, it’s in amazing condition and measures 7,3cm x 4,2cm x 2cm and weighs 51,8g.
