Antique Colonial Indian Silver Pepperette (Hamilton & Co.) (C.1840)

Sold!

This wonderful, very early, fine quality piece of colonial silver was made in Calcutta, India around the 1840/50’s, by silversmith ‘Hamilton & Co.’ who was probably the best known and celebrated British silversmith operating in India. The pepperette has a lovely shape and is made of a thick gauge silver, giving it a nice solid feel and weight. It is decorated with beautiful repousse grapevines around the foot, middle and shoulders, and engraved ‘PEPPER’ around the middle, and topped with a snug fitting domed pierced lid, which has nice clear hallmarks around the edge dating this piece between 1840 and 1850. The pepperette stands 10,5cm high with a 5cm diameter at its widest, and weighs a heavy 118,3g.
