Antique Royal Doulton ‘Chine-Lace’ Gilt Stoneware Ewer (C1905)

Sold!

This very early, attractive Royal Doulton ‘Slater’ stoneware ewer with ‘Chine’ gilt decoration is in excellent condition and was produced in England around 1905. It has a lovely shape, with a mottled grey, glazed slender neck, a cobalt blue glazed interior, and an unusual blue and white floral design and texture around the body with gilding in between. The ewer was designed and painted by ‘Rosina Harris’ (RH) and decorated in the ‘Chine’ pattern, which was invented by ‘Slater’, who was the director of Royal Doulton from 1887 to 1936. The ‘Chine’ pattern was created by pressing a textile or lace onto the wet clay to create the desired effect. The base is impressed with the early ‘Royal Doulton’ backstamp, ‘SLATER PATENT’ and ‘RH’ for the artist/designer. The ewer stands 21cm high.
