This fabulous, rare, fine quality, antique sterling silver christening mug is in superb condition and was made in 1907 in Birmingham, England by silversmiths ‘Levi & Salaman’ (L&S). It is beautifully decorated in relief with scenes and wording from the well-known children’s nursery rhyme ‘This Little Pig’, with a vacant heart-shaped cartouche on the front, bordered with scrolling leaf and floral patterns. The one side features the words of the nursery rhyme in full, and the other side depicts, in wonderful detail, five repoussé scenes from the nursery rhyme, along with the wording of each scene. This is by far, one of the nicest christening mugs I’ve come across, and it appears to be a rare piece, as the only one I could find on the net is retailing for over R40 000. The mug stands 8cm high, has a base diameter of 6,7cm, measures 9,3cm at its widest including handle and weighs 92,7g.
