Sold!

This gorgeous, large cameo brooch from the 1940/50’s, can be either worn as a pendant or a brooch, and features a beautifully hand carved scene of three dancing lady’s, known as the ‘Three Graces’. In Greek mythology, they represent the ideals of female beauty (see note below). The shell cameo is mounted in a solid silver gilt or gold washed oval frame, set with marcasite stones, and is stamped ‘800’ on the back. The brooch is in excellent condition, with a secure pin and roll over clasp, and measures 5cm x 3,7cm.

Note: Other than Aphrodite (Venus), who is the goddess of love and beauty, there were other goddesses of love, known as the ‘Graces’. There were three girls, daughters of Zeus and Eurynome, who were referred to as the ‘Three Graces’. They were Aglai, Euphrosyne, and Thalya, who were inseparable, and besides love and beauty, the girls were also associated with nature, creativity, fertility, charm, splendor, and joy, in other words, the graces.
