Incredible Antique ‘Carved Pearl Oyster Shell’ (Pinctada)

Sold!

This impressive piece of art from the late 1800’s/early 1900’s, has been beautifully hand carved and engraved on the inner surface (mother-of-pearl) of a large pearl oyster shell (Pinctada). The work and details are amazing, and it must have taken weeks if not months to complete. It’s hand carved in different layers and depths, like a cameo, giving it a three-dimensional look and feel, as well as various shades of colour. The scene features a large, winged angel holding a baby in one arm, with a small town in the background, a flowing river and bridge on the bottom left, and what looks like an oak tree on the right with lovely vine-like leaves. I don’t think the photographs do this piece justice, as some of the detail is incredible. The shell measures 15,5cm x 15cm, weighs 213g and other than a tiny chip to the front right corner, it’s in great condition.
