Large Antique ‘Farmers Arms’ Cider Mug & Saucer (Burgess & Leigh)
$76.32
This lovely, large, colourful, antique, ceramic cider mug and saucer from the early 1900’s was made in England by ‘Burgess & Leigh’ (B&L). The mug on the front features numerous farming implements with the words ‘GOD SPEED THE PLOUGH’ and on the back, the words ‘INDUSTRY – PRODUCETH - WEALTH’ with a farmer’s poem above which reads:
‘Let the wealthy and great roll in splendour and state. I envy them not, I declare it. I eat my own lamb, my own chickens and ham. I shear my own fleece and I wear it. I have lawns, I have bowers, I have fruits, I have flowers. The lark is my morning alarmer. So jolly boys now, here’s God speed the plough, long life, and success to the farmer’.
Both the mug and saucer are in excellent condition and are stamped on their bases ‘FARMERS ARMS’ ‘B & L’ and ‘ENGLAND’. The mug stands 9,5cm high with a top diameter of 10,5cm and the saucer measures 18,5cm in diameter with a depth of 3cm.
