This beautiful, impressive, rare, extra-large, hand-painted plate or charger, titled ‘PRIMROSE 1588’, was produced in 1950 by the ‘Poole Pottery’ factory in England. It is beautifully designed and painted in wonderful colours with lovely detail and features a large, early sailing ship, ‘The Primrose’, along with the sun and clouds above, with a face among the clouds, blowing wind into the sails and two whales swimming amongst the waves below. The ‘Primrose’ was part of the British fleet who defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588. The large plate has a painted inscription on the back which reads ‘This Dish was made and painted at the POOLE POTTERY in the year 1950’ and ‘Ship drawn by Arthur Bradbury’ and painted by ‘Eileen Hunt’ and is impressed with the design number ‘528’ and ‘POOLE ENGLAND’. This impressive plate is in excellent condition with three holes on the back to assist with hanging and measures 38cm in diameter, with a weight of 1,9kg.
