Rare Antique Brass Bottle Jack Spit Turner

Sold!

This rare piece was manufactured by ‘Salters England.’ A bottle jack is a Victorian device for turning a spit, which was hung in front of a fire or from a jack rack which was suspended above a fire. The clockwork mechanism inside this jack rotates the meat to roast it evenly (the meat is turned for several rotations in one direction and then back in the other). It is wound by a brass key (key included). It is stamped on the base ‘SALTERS & CO’ and the no. ’25.’ It is in great condition for its age with the odd minor dent and measures 37cm in length, 10cm in width and weighs 1085g.
