Rare Antique Georgian Silver ‘Mote’ Spoon (C.1750)
This original and very seldom seen, 18th Century, English spoon is in excellent condition. The ‘mote’ spoon has a lovely, decorative, hand pierced, oval bowl designed for removing tea leaves/motes from tea bowls. It has a narrow, long handle coming to a point, for what is believed to be used for unblocking the strainer holes inside the teapot. The spoon is stamped with the makers mark only (which was common with these early spoons). The mark, which is a little worn, looks like ‘I.C.’ It is hard to think this spoon is nearly 300 years old. It measures 14cm in length and the bowl is 4cm x 2cm.
