Superb French Silver & Enamel Antique Snuff Box (Claude D. Roussel)

Sold!

This exceptional quality, beautifully enamelled, late 19th century French, solid silver, rectangular snuff box was made in Paris and bears the Master Silversmiths mark of ‘Claude Doutre-Roussel’, a maker who was known for his unparalleled quality and craftsmanship that received commissions from King Louis-Philippe and other European royal households including Spain and Russia. It is made from a heavy gauge of silver and superbly decorated all round with some fine, green and blue enamelling on the lid, with ‘engine turned’ patterns on the base and around the sides with the ‘fleur de le’ engraved on the corners. The central cartouche is engraved with a family crest, featuring a ‘Cockrell perched on a castle tower’ and other than some very minor wear to the enamel, it’s in superb condition with a snug fitting lid. This wonderful piece measures 7,5cm x 4,2cm x 1,8cm and weighs 71,3g.
