Victorian Brass ’Francis Barker’ Compass (Pre -1875)

Sold!

This scarce, very early, Victorian, brass half hunter, cased pocket compass by ‘Francis Barker’ bears the pre-1875 (correct ‘S’), triangle trademark on the back, indicating it was produced while ‘Francis Barker Snr.’ was still alive. This is a rare design, where it has an unusual brass added piece to the top ring with a small sighting hole. It also has a manual transit lock on the side as well as a small damping brake near the lock, which helps settle the compass when taking a sighting. Other than tarnishing to the brass case the compass is in great condition and appears to be working well, with the transit lock and brake functioning. It has a diameter of 51mm, a depth of 20mm and weighs 108,6g.
