Victorian Silver Chatelaine Thimble Case (1901)

Sold!

This scarce, lovely, antique repousse, solid silver thimble holder or case is fitted with a short chain and small loop, to attach a chatelaine. It was made in Birmingham, England in 1901 by silversmiths ‘Henry Matthews’ (HM). The holder has an attractive shape with a hinged lid and is decorated with four panels, each bordered with embossed scroll work and comes with a good quality, early white metal thimble, which is stamped on the side ‘CH 8’ & ‘DORCAS’. This collectable case is in excellent condition with its original gilt interior, has clear hallmarks and would have originally been one of the numerous accessories a lady would attach to her chatelaine. It measures 2,8cm x 4,5cm (6,5cm with short chain), and weighs 14g (20,4g with thimble).
