Vintage Articulated Sterling Silver ‘Candida’ Brooch

This very unusual South African silver ‘Candida’ brooch with moving parts, features a large potjie pot with swing handle and a hidden Zulu child, who pops out the top. It is really well made, with great detail, and in excellent condition. It is stamped on the back ‘STER SILV’ & ‘CANDIDA’. This was the trade name used by ‘Joe Calafato’, a South African creative jeweller and silversmith, who was active between 1947 and 1984. This is one of his earlier pieces, made between 1947-1951, it measures 5,5cm x 3,9cm, and weighs 15,9g.
