WW1 Death Plaque to ‘D.W. Begley’ – S.A. Field Artillery (23/12/18)
This original, early, WW1 memorial plaque with stand, is named to ‘David William Begley’ of the ‘South African Field Artillery’, who died in France on the 23rd of December in 1918. The plaque is mounted in the centre of a lovely, heavy cast iron frame or stand, featuring decorative scroll work, wreaths of leaves, and two ‘Pegasus’ making up the base, all in heavy relief. I’ve included a photograph of his gravestone at the ‘Kantara War Memorial Cemetery’ in Egypt, plus a list of his service details, which I found on ‘The South Africa Graves Project’ site. The frame stands 25cm high, with a width of 21cm, a depth of 7,5cm and it weighs 1,45kg. Other than something missing to the back of the frame, the Death Plaque and stand are in great condition
